In these minutes, I shall speak of the wisdom of life in the common meaning of the term, as the art, namely, of ordering our lives so as to obtain the greatest possible amount of pleasure and success, an art the theory of which may be called Eudaemonology, for it teaches us how to lead a happy existence. Such an existence might perhaps be defined as one which, looked at from a purely objective point of view, or, rather, after cool and mature reflection, for the question necessarily involves subjective considerations, and would be decidedly preferable to non-existence, implying that we should cling to it for its own sake, and not merely from the fear of death, and further, that we should never like it to come to an end.
Now whether human life corresponds, or could possibly correspond, to this conception of existence, is a question to which, as is well-known, my philosophical system returns a negative answer. On the eudaemonistic hypothesis, however, the question must be answered in the affirmative. I have shown, in the second volume of my chief work, that this hypothesis is based upon a fundamental mistake.
Accordingly, in elaborating the scheme of a happy existence, I have had to make a complete surrender of the higher metaphysical and ethical standpoint to which my own theories lead and everything I shall say here will to some extent rest upon a compromise in so far, that is, as I take the common standpoint of every day, and embrace the error which is at the bottom of it. My remarks, therefore, will possess only a qualified value, for the very word eudaemonology is a euphemism. Further, I make no claims to completeness; partly because the subject is inexhaustible, and partly because I should otherwise have to say over again what has been already said by others.

Arthur, where have you been all my life? Philosophy holds so many answers. It's all about WILL and how it is constantly thrown off track by our personality and by our emotions. My best philosophy quote so far (in my studies), is Will is "the natural flow of an unimpeded idea to action". Which means, you try not to overeat and you really want to not overeat but you can't do it because your emotions and the urge to be nurtured get in the way. Willpower is when you can make it happen. But this is a frustrating translation. The foreign language sentences throughout the book are not translated, for example page 11, omnis motus, quo celerior, eo magis motus. What does that mean? You might know what it means but we don't. And there are lots of foreign language sentences throughout the book. Very frustrating.
But I'm getting a lot of life changing fixes out of the book and am thankful to have met Arthur Schopenhauer - thanks to Will Durant.

The Wisdom of Life (Audible Audio Edition) Arthur Schopenhauer Ron Welch Shane C Books Reviews
Awesome, a must read
Nicely book love it
Probably I'm gonna read it again soon
I absolutely loved The Wisdom of Life and would highly recommend it.
should be ashamed of this kindle version. It's just unreadable. Wisdom and warning ........ do not buy this version.
Seriously why did it take me so long to find this incredible writer? If you have the patience to read a little slowly and digest and contemplate the information in this book .. it WILL change you inside .. for the better most likely ;)
I was happy to find these essays by Schopenhauer available for the . I happened to be rereading Nietzsche's 'Genealogy of Morals' at the time and it was interesting to compare Schopenhauer's recommendations of the way to the good life with Nietzsche's opinion that an ascetic approach was just Schopenhauer's way to cope.
The last essay was amusing as it was a thinly disguised rant "someday I will have the fame I deserve while that flash in the pan, Hegel, will be forgotten". He was partially right in that he is remembered but Hegel never faded away.
Another reviewer remarked that some of the cited snippets were not translated, 'sume superbiam quaesitam meritis' for example. In almost every case, Schopenhauer presumably paraphrased or translated the quote into German, which was then translated in the present text. "--usurp the fame you have deserved", which directly follows, is a possible translation of the exhortation to the Muse Melpomene in Ode 3.30 to get on with it.
I got quite a bit out of reading this booklet. Schopenhauer's philosophical explorations helped clarify and bolster some musings and observations of my own. It was nice to sense a kindred spirit across the centuries...well, on *some* topics, but definitely not others!
The man had some seriously racist, misogynistic, and nationalistic beliefs! Yowza... A couple of passages were so bad they made me wonder if I should give the rest of his words any credence at all. Granted he lived in different times, but still...
Also, he came across as thinking too highly of himself.
But overall, I felt kind of honored to read his honest reflections penned so long ago.
