While this is a completely different turn on the normal shifter classic, I love what Raven did here. I bought the box set, and I'm glad I did.Ash and Connal have stuck with me even years later and that says something about the strength of the story. By taking elements of traditional myth, adding in a traditional setting like Dublin, and mixing in a new twist for tension and danger, Raven has given The Becoming Trilogy something to latch onto.
And Ash and Connal were hot, it helps. If you like something darker with a touch of myth, try this out. It's strongest element is its story.

I bought these books on the advice of a friend, who knows my love of paranormal romance, and has the same taste I do. I'm so glad I got them! This is the first series that I have read that is not by one of my usual authors (for the record, I also read Sherrilyn Kenyon's Dark Hunter series and am ADDICTED to Kresley Cole's Immortals After Dark series). It was a bit difficult for me to get going with the series, but I believe that was more due to me being out of my character/storyline/series comfort zone than anything else. The pacing of the books is delightful and keeps you on the edge of your seat the entire time. I am a lover of mythology and ancient history, which made this series that much more wonderful for me. I always enjoy authors who take legends that have been around for centuries and use their storytelling abilities to create believable back stories for how those legends came to be.
Truthfully, I want to order Connal Savage for Christmas so that I can have him all to myself, but I believe I would probably settle for any of the Fomor. A parade of overgrown hotties that just happen to have sexually addicting bites? Yes please! These ladies have truly outdone themselves. Each of the main characters is well developed and is not just some automoton on the page to keep the story moving. The supporting characters are also well done and wonderfully diverse in order to give the series a well-rounded appeal. Sometimes authors forget that the background characters are just as important. Not so with this series! All in all, I am giving this five stars and am hoping we will see more from these ladies very soon. Brava!
So save your self the aggravation of just reading book one and jump in the box set it is worth it and you save a few pennies. Great story line if you can make it past book one to book two where things start to make sense. A interesting story line that will keep you up at night or wanting to take a day off work to finish. Great story, good romance, lots of suspense, and a whole erotic and loving going on to make things intresting. Worth your time if you can make it past the "what the heck is going on" feeling in book one. Happy reading.
Wow, I got the first book for free and cliffhanger ending was so awesome I couldn't not buy the trilogy (Hint BUY the trilogy all together it's cheaper than individually buying books). These books were not my usual read, however anything set or about Ireland catches my attention and boy was I grateful to have read these books. If you love Ireland, strong H/h, strong storyline, great romance and good secondary characters you'll love these books. Caution the first half of book one takes a little time to get used to the different wording but the story is amazing so stick with it... won't re-cap the synopsis, read the other reviews so if your hesitant like I was, download the first book for free and see if it catches your attention it did mine!!!
I purchased book one and really enjoyed it and so went back to purchase the trilogy. The main characters Ashley and Connal become a very engaging couple who have more than their share office challenges. There are other supporting characters who add so much color and depth to the story that it is fleshed out into a love story, adventure, and other realm fantasy. I would highly recommend this set to anyone who enjoys a good paranormal series.
I just purchased the Boxed Set after reading the first novel Becomming Red. I mentioned in that review that a good editor could have the authors establish their world building with less words and more clarity. It had one plot device I wish more books would employee The hero comes out and tells the heroine he cares for her and the heroine pulls up her big girl panties and does the same. How many stories would benefit from this and get on to more interesting conflicts and obstacles.
The second book picks up where the first left off and Connal is fighting for his life in the Fomorian underworld. Ash comes to and finds herself a prisoner and tries to learn how to survive without letting go of Connal. Can Ash and Connal take on both the Morrigan and the Fomarians? Excellent world building based on old Irish legends.
I am a huge fan of Kresley Cole and JR Ward. Their writing reads like I think, so their books just totally reach me and I can blow through them in no time flat once I buy them. I've been testing out new authors in the genre and haven't found much that I've enjoyed in that same way.
The Becoming Trilogy was excellent. I really enjoyed the setting and mythology used in these stories. You get a wide variety in other similar novels in the genre but the Irish mythology was especially appealing. The characters were a bit stock but they developed well in to 'people' I enjoyed getting involved with. The sex is graphic but good and not so much that it detracts from the overall story (I like some good smut in my paranormal fiction!) I think it could have played more with the mythology throughout the series rather than bits and pieces/hints at it in the early sections of the story. I would have loved more item with the gods (so to speak).
Liked these enough to get through all 3 in about as many days of evening reading. Also liked them enough to purchase The Rousing A Celtic in the Blood Novella. Looking forward to getting in to that one as well. Hope this partnership creates more work in their repertoire. They definitely have a fan in me!
